Myron Dewrance SC

I commenced practice as an Advocate in 2004 and was conferred the status of Senior Counsel in 2018. I am a member, in good standing, of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates (“the JSA”), holding chambers in the Bridge Group in Sandown Village, Sandton. I’ve been an insolvency practitioner since 1998 (as examiner in the Office of the Master, Pretoria, liquidator and advocate.)

Although my practice, spanning nineteen (19) years, is expansive, it is dominated by commercial litigation, including insolvency law, banking law, competition law, credit law and contractual disputes. The other areas of my expertise and interest include administrative law, tax law, evictions, property law, construction law and water law. I have appeared in all the High Courts in South Africa, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Constitutional Court and the High Court of eSwatini. I also regularly appear in large commercial arbitrations.

I act on behalf of the liberation movement in eSwatini, the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) and acted on behalf of its current President in declaring the Suppression of Terrorism Act unconstitutional. I also act on behalf the independent media of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) against the eSwatini regime. In addition to the aforesaid I also represent international businesses in international commercial disputes.

Having acted as a Judge, both in Johannesburg and Pretoria on sixteen (16) occasions, one of the high – water marks of my career was the upholding of my judgment by the Supreme Court of Appeal and later the Constitutional Court in the matter of Diener N.O. v Minister of Justice and Correctional Services and Others 2019 (2) BCLR 214 (CC). The judgment deals with the conversion of business rescue proceedings to liquidation and the ranking of the practitioner’s claim. My previous experience at the Office of the Master of the High Court and as a liquidator has resulted in insolvency law being my field of greatest interest.

I am the past chairman of the Tax Board appointed by the Minister of Finance.

I was member of the Bar Council of the JSA from 2018/2019 to 20201/2022 years, having been elected as a representative of Advocates for Transformation (“AFT”). I am currently the National Chairperson of AFT and the Chairperson of the General Council of the Bar of South Africa.

I subscribe to its ethos of effecting transformation within the legal profession and hold the emphatic view that there is strong need to radically transform the skewed racial and gender demographic of the legal profession, including the judiciary, so that it is properly reflective of South African society.
