Mbalenhle Mathe

Immediately, prior to joining the Johannesburg Society of Advocates, I was employed as an Assistant State Attorney at the Office of the State Attorney, Johannesburg, for a period of three years. I was responsible for case flow management, conducting trials, Motion proceedings and appeals.

I have gained experience in litigious and non-litigious matters which involve drafting opinions and conducting preliminary investigations.

Prior to that, I was employed as a Professional Legal Practitioner at Findlater Attorneys, where I was responsible for conducting civil and criminal trials, as well as opposed motion proceedings.

As an attorney, I have appeared in the High Court with Counsel in various matters which, involved determining disputes in civil law. I have also appeared in matters where the court was tasked with determining reviews under PAJA.

Further, I have appeared with Counsel in Arbitrations as well as with Clients in Mediation proceedings.

I have also appeared independently in the Magistrate’s Courts (District and Regional Courts).

I have had the pleasure of representing various State Organisations and Officials (government departments, MEC’s and Ministers) in different cases including the following;

Minister of Police;
MEC for the Gauteng Department of Health;
MEC for Roads and Public Transport, and
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

During the last quarter of my pupilage year and upon passing the National Bar Exams, I appeared in the High Court independently for unopposed motions, RAF matters and other general civil disputes.

As at 14th December 2023, I have been joined as a member of the Johannesburg Bar and practice as such.
