Hermie George were admitted to the Society of Advocates in 2024 after being admitted as an attorney in January 2011. She specialises in disputes related to customs, excise and tax law. The World Customs Organisation (WCO), located in Brussels, Belgium, and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) are the sources of her expertise in tax, customs and excise.
She worked as a Specialist in Customs and Excise Litigation at SARS from January 2011 to December 2023. She was acting Senior Manager when she resigned. Her section handled national lawsuits pertaining to customs and excise disputes.
From 2014 to 2017, she worked as a Technical Customs Attaché for the World Customs Organisation. Implementing the Trade Facilitation Agreement, managing international treaties, engaging stakeholders, providing technical training on international customs procedures, and creating a guidebook on national committees on trade facilitation were among her responsibilities.
Hermie’s articles in 2009 at Van Greunen and Associates, the Legal Aid Board and her Pupillage in 2024 have given her extensive knowledge in a variety of legal disciplines, such as commercial law, criminal law, labour law and family law, amongst others.
The University of Canberra in Australia awarded her a Master of International Customs Law and Administration (2014), which is her highest degree. The World Customs Organisation awarded her an international accreditation in 2017 for international customs and trade law. Working with other international agencies, like the World Trade Organisation, United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Development Bank, European Union, African Union, and several other Customs Unions, has been made possible by her exposure to the WCO and other countries.
Hermie is steadfast in her defence of human rights, fervent in her belief in the advancement of humanity, and compelling in her presentation of equality issues.
She also promotes the inclusion of all individuals in all spheres of society and is gregarious and personable.
