Heidi Barnes SC has 24 years experience as an Advocate at the Johannesburg Bar. She has over 60 reported judgments and has appeared in the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the High Court, the Labour Court and the Land Claims Court. She has also appeared in the Supreme Courts in Botswana and Eswatini
Heidi has a BA from the University of Natal, Durban and an LLB and LLM in Public Law from the University of Cape Town.
Heidi began her legal career as the first researcher for the judges of the newly established Land Claims Court in 1998. Thereafter she did her articles at what was then Hofmeyr, Herbstein and Gihwala. Heidi was called to the Bar in 2001. She practices in the areas of constitutional, administrative, human rights, land and labour law.
Heidi took Silk in 2019.
Heidi was the first woman leader of the Bridge Group of Advocates. She led the Group for 5 years, from 2020 to 2024.
Heidi has served as an Acting Judge on numerous occasions in the High Court, the Labour Court and the Land Claims Court. She also regularly sits as an arbitrator.
